Why We Went to the Desert
I yearned for the slick stillness
boulders hold inside their hardness,
even for the sadness of evening primrose
collapsed by an unconscious step.
I craved the quiet cold of night
so I might see myself in stars
and mirrorless canyon walls,
bathe myself in morning, evening, and sky.
I needed her eyes to feel the red of the rocks,
her small hands to skim the surface of clear Kayenta water.
I wanted her to hear the Onion Creek honesty
flowing through Entrada earth.
But most of all, I longed for her to witness
how a little creek can push back big boulders,
and how evening primrose can rise again,
how it blossoms out of night.
